We’re excited to announce our upcoming Eat&Meet lunch at the European Parliament in Brussels! Our host and speaker for this session will be Helga Stevens, a Belgian politician of the New Flemish Alliance (NVA), member of the European Parliament and Fulbright alumna. After the lunch we will have a short tour of the parliament!

Helga Stevens has been a Member of Parliament for the New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) since years. She was elected as Member of the Flemish Parliament in 2004 and re-elected in 2009. She was appointed Community Senator by the Flemish Parliament in 2007 and again in 2010 (in 2010 she was also directly elected as Senator). She was elected Member of the European Parliament in 2014. Helga also served on the City Council of Ghent, Belgium, from 2007 till 2014.

Ms. Stevens was born deaf and was raised in a deaf-hearing family in Sint-Truiden. She first went to school in ‘het Koninklijk Instituut voor Doven en Spraakgestoorden’ (KIDS) in Hasselt but switched to a regular primary school in her hometown of Sint-Truiden when she was ten years old . After finishing secondary school in 1987, Helga spent a year in Saint-Louis, Missouri USA as a Rotary exchange student. During a visit of Gallaudet University in Washington D.C. she met with a deaf attorney who convinced her to study law.  After graduating in Belgium she completed a LL.M. Program at the University of California in Berkeley, USA as a Fulbright grantee.

These thematic lunches give Fulbright alumni the opportunity to meet and hear the experiences of leaders working in different professional areas.
