The U.S.-E.U. Fulbright program, funded by the Department of State and the European Commission, DG Education and Culture, and administered by the Belgian/Luxembourg Fulbright Commission, has a new name: the Fulbright-Schuman Program (or Schuman-Fulbright Program, depending on which side of the Atlantic you are on). It also has increased funding. This program is unique in the sense that it is multi-lateral: on the European side, students and scholars from any of the 27 Member States of the EU are allowed to apply. On the U.S. side, American scholars and students can carry out their projects in any of the Member States of the EU and multi-country projects are encouraged. It is also unique in terms of field of study: projects must be on U.S.-E.U. relations or EU affairs.

Thirty-five Belgian and Luxembourg grantees will leave for the U.S. for academic projects during the academic year 2008-09. It was an extremely excellent year, with outstanding students and scholars in many different fields of study. The grantees were welcomed in the official residence of Ambassador Sam Fox on Thursday, June 19th for a lovely reception in their honor. The reception was also in honor the 2007-08 American grantees who are finishing their year and preparing to return to the U.S. The reception was very well attended by the Belgian, Luxembourg and American grantees, as well as the officers of the Fulbright Alumni Association, selection committee members, and representatives of private donors to the Fulbright Program.
